Welcome to the Seventh Annual Meeting of the Society for Heart and Vascular Metabolism. The Society was founded in 2000 by a group of investigators who have a special interest in the multiple roles of intermediary metabolism in the cardiovascular system with the intent of providing a forum for the free exchange of ideas. The first meeting was held in Freiburg, Germany in 2003, followed by meetings in Montebello, Canada (2004); Oxford, England (2005); Semiahmoo, Washington (2006); Maastricht, The Netherlands (2007) and Boston (2008). This year’s meeting includes a tribute to Richard Bing, who will celebrate his 100th birthday in 2009. The Organizing Committee has put together an exciting program for this meeting as well. We are grateful to our speakers and also to you, our attendees. After all, metabolism is about flux (as Heraclitus already knew in 450 BC). It is the aim of the Society to foster interaction of young investigators with senior scientists in a rapidly changing discipline with deep roots in classical biochemistry. What better place to do this than Padova, Italy!
